As a volunteer in Magdala, one of the most enriching experiences I've had is discovering and living out humility within a beautiful, virtuous circle: the humility of the Lord that leads to joy—and that joy, in turn, brings us back to humility. It’s a constant movement that transforms the heart and invites us to grow in love and self-giving towards others.
Humility, more than just an attitude, is a deep detachment from oneself. It’s letting go of ego, releasing the need for control, and emptying ourselves of pride so that we can be truly filled—with love, with charity, with a spirit of service. It’s a brave act, because it means recognizing our limitations and accepting that we are not the center—God is. This sincere openness of heart is what allows us to experience authentic joy. Not a fleeting or superficial kind of happiness, but a profound, lasting joy that satisfies the soul and brings deep peace. It’s a joy that doesn’t come from external circumstances or personal achievements—it comes from God alone.
One of the phrases that moves me the most—and captures this truth so beautifully—is found in the Magnificat:
“My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked upon the lowliness of His servant.”
Mary’s words reveal how she, with her entire life, became a living example of humility and complete trust in God’s will. Her canticle is not just a song of praise—it is a testimony. A testimony of what it means to accept God’s work in us with humility, even in the midst of uncertainty and difficulty.
The Magnificat unveils a joy that is deep and unwavering. Mary surely faced moments of fear and anguish—the weight of a mission so great, the unknowns of the future. Yet her heart remained steady and trusting because she knew: God was doing something great in her. And this trust is a call for each of us—to learn to surrender our lives without
reservation, believing that God is faithful, and that His plan is perfect, even if we don’t fully
understand it.
The trust in God that Mary teaches us is the certainty that even though our understanding is limited and our human strength small, we can live in peace and joy when we fully entrust ourselves to Him. That surrender frees us from anxiety and fear, and opens us to a new life—marked by hope, faith, and love.
Here in Magdala, having the chance to live this spiritual journey, to encounter Mary and learn from her example, has deeply transformed me. She guides me in prayer, teaches me to trust God more, and helps me to humbly surrender to His will, resting in His goodness and mercy.
This path of humility and joy is a gift—one I want to share, because I know it leads to a full and true life, filled with meaning and inner peace.
