Join the excavations at Magdala this summer 2026
Between late December 2025 and early January 2026, Universidad Anáhuac México carried out a new archaeological excavation season at the site of Magdala. The work was conducted in collaboration with Tel Aviv University and with the participation of volunteers from the Magdala Center and was focused both on the conservation of the archaeological site and on its future presentation to visitors.
During this initial phase, the team was able to define with greater precision a first-century CE residence, identifying its architectural boundaries and the streets surrounding it. These advances lay the groundwork for integrating past and future excavations and contribute to a deeper understanding of Magdala’s urban and residential organization during the Roman period.
We are also excited to share the news that a new excavation season will take place in the summer of 2026, and that the archaeological volunteer program will resume. Since the beginning of the excavations, volunteers have been a key part of the project, not only for their hands-on work, but also for their enthusiasm, their desire to learn, and their generous commitment to engaging with Magdala’s past.
Between 2010 and 2019, more than 1,000 volunteers from diverse nationalities, religious backgrounds, and interests took part in the excavations. Their involvement left a profound mark on the development of the project and on the life of the site. This experience fills us with gratitude and pride and encourages us to continue welcoming volunteers in the field of archaeology.
No prior experience is required to participate in the excavations; only a good attitude to work and a desire to learn. Registration will be available through the Magdala website, where additional information on how to participate will also be published.
