Second Sunday of Advent: The Baby King Triumphs

This week, we continue our Star of Wonder: Advent Virtual Pilgrimage of Life, we journey to the Herodium, King Herod’s grand fortress and tomb overlooking Bethlehem. Once a monument to worldly power and pride, the Herodium contrasts sharply with the humble kingship of Jesus, born just miles away.

Reflecting on Matthew 2:7–18, we explore Herod’s rage and fear of a baby king — and how Christ’s crown of the Cross reveals a kingship rooted in love, humility, and self-sacrifice. True power, as Jesus shows, is not domination but the gift of oneself for others.

Our pilgrimage then leads to Bethlehem’s Crèche Holy Family Orphanage, where Sister Lodi and her community of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincet de Paul care for abandoned infants and children with compassion and faith. Founded in 1884, it remains the only institution in Palestine serving infants to age six — living witnesses of Christ’s love through service.

This week’s symbol is the Crown, reminding us that every Christian is called to reign with Christ through love, mercy, and self-giving.
