Magdala today: An inside perspective

The Holy Land has recently gone through a period of tension and uncertainty.
Although a ceasefire now brings a moment of relief, the past weeks have left a visible impact on daily life across the region. In Magdala, we have also felt the weight of these complex circumstances.

Today, silence feels more present.
No pilgrims are walking through the Women’s Atrium, no guests are waking up to the Sea of Galilee. The archaeological site remains closed, and many of our collaborators have had to remain at home. Activity has been reduced to a minimum, and so have our resources.

Still, a small group of people remains here with steady hearts, sustaining daily life with hope and dedication. Some volunteers continue walking with us. Masses are still being celebrated and streamed every day. The spaces continue to be lovingly cared for.
Now more than ever, prayer here does not stop.

Magdala is still alive.

Because Magdala is not just a physical place.

It is a sign of faith.

It is a calling.

Even when the sea is rough, it is a boat that never stops rowing into the deep.

This Jubilee Year, dedicated to hope, reminds us that trusting in God does not mean denying hardship, but firmly believing that He never abandons His work. That hope—steadfast, patient, and active—is what we strive to live out here in Magdala.

In this context, the call to Duc In Altumput out into the deep—resounds louder than ever. It is an invitation not to stop, to trust again, to cast out again, even amid uncertainty.

Your prayers and support are more than a contribution—they are acts of hope.

Thanks to you, those who keep Magdala alive can continue their work with heart and strength.

Every gift helps sustain the care of this sacred space and fuels the flame of faith that extends from Galilee to the entire world.
