Ancient Magdala Publication: Discovering One Chapter at a Time.

In November 2025, the first volume presenting the archaeological excavations at Magdala conducted by Anáhuac Mexico University was published. Titled Ancient Magdala: Archaeological Excavations (2010–2017), Volume I: “Daily Life, First Interpretations” and edited by Marcela Zapata-Meza, this volume brings together eleven chapters that we will explore gradually through this newsletter.

The first chapter, “Historiography: History of Expeditions and Historical Context,” written by Rosaura Sanz-Rincón, presents the evidence for the earliest historical references to the site, the expeditions and pilgrimages that contributed to its identification, and the excavations that have expanded our understanding of Magdala.

The chapter also examines the historical context of Galilee, its Roman and regional administration, and the evolution of the settlement over time, taking into account the political and administrative changes that shaped the history of the region. In addition, it provides an extensive collection of references related to archaeological research and historical geography, highlighting the significance of Magdala/Taricheae during the Second Temple period.

We invite you to learn more about this publication through upcoming editions of our newsletter and through Archeopress, where you can access Volume I and discover the results of the first seven years of excavations at Magdala conducted by the Mexican archaeological expedition.
