An Anniversary for Reflection

Today we celebrate the 11th anniversary of the inauguration of Duc in Altum and the Magdala Archaeological Park.

Since the discovery of the synagogue in 2009, and over the following years, intense efforts were made to uncover the first-century village and open this very special place to pilgrims. In 2014, the Duc in Altum and the archaeological park were officially inaugurated- a milestone moment in the history of the project.

It was a major achievement: our beautiful Duc in Altum opened its doors to pilgrims, and archaeology began to tell the story of a Galilean town from the time of Jesus: the hometown of Mary Magdalene.

In today's world, which constantly pushes us to seek “what's new," productivity, and quick results, this anniversary invites us to pause and reflect.

Archaeology teaches us that truly valuable things take time. It reveals the beauty of everyday life in the past: what people believed, how they lived, what they built with their hands and their faith. It helps us appreciate both the simplicity and the depth of those who came before us.

Following archaeology’s patient example, this anniversary also invites us to look back with gratitude for the work that has been done. In just a few years, this site has become a source of light, transforming the way pilgrims experience Galilee and the Holy Land, and helping us better understand ancient Judaism and the Christian Origins

Let us give thanks for these years, for all that has been discovered and for all that is yet to be revealed in this holy place.
