Archaeology 2026: publications, excavations, and more

In recent years, the archaeological work at Magdala has continued to yield results beyond the fieldwork, particularly through publications that make it possible to bring long processes of excavation and research to a close while, at the same time, opening new lines of reflection on the site and its historical context.

One of these publications is the book From the Magdala Stone to the Syriac Bema, published in 2025 and edited by Rina Talgam, Dina Avshalom-Gorni, and Arfan Najar. This volume explores the relationships between architectural spaces and liturgical practices in synagogues and churches in Antiquity, highlighting the discoveries made in the Magdala synagogue. More information can be found here.

In addition, Ancient Magdala: Archaeological Excavations (2010–2017), Volume I: Daily Life, First Interpretations, edited by Marcela Zapata, was published in 2025. This first volume presents the initial interpretations drawn from several years of excavations in the ancient town of Magdala and offers a view of daily life and the urban development of the archaeological site. Looking ahead to 2026, we are pleased to announce that we will resume archaeological excavations. During the summer, we will return to fieldwork and welcome volunteers interested in participating in the excavation. In the coming weeks, we will share more information about dates, requirements, and ways to get involved through our website.

We thank everyone who continues to accompany and support this path of research at Magdala.
