Juliana Martin, June 2016 – February 2017. Mexico
I came to Magdala with an open mind, ready for an experience that I knew I would enjoy. Magdala surpassed all of my expectations. At the beginning it was hard – I knew I was coming to work, but I didn’t know that Magdala would be so demanding and such hard work. As time passed, I adapted to the routine, the habits, the discipline, etc. What started of as being a ton of work slowly but surely became more second nature. The most meaningful Masses, where the homily really touched my heart, were at Magdala. I experienced God’s love mostly in my relationships with the people around me. The warm environment that forms among the volunteers is incredible; it’s truly like being part of a family. For me, Magdala became an oasis of peace, far away from everything – my family, my friends, my environment, creature comforts, and worries… People come here and encounter God. You get to find God in the people, who come to give their best and find the best in everyone else. Here at Magdala, charity, love, and service are actually tangible. I know that this experience marks a before and after in my life. I spent 8 months full of work, faith, exhaustion, fun, and effort – all in excellent company. Thank you for everything, Magdala!
