Dear Friends of Magdala,
Our project continues to grow not just in the physical and material construction of the campus (as you will see from the photographs) — but through God´s own providence, Magdala is growing in his message and spirituality, as well.
In this newsletter you will see that Magdala has been filled with activity. We have begun a new archaeological season and new volunteers have arrived to help us. There have been many diverse activities and visiting groups hosted at the Magdala site. Thousands of pilgrims have continued to visit.
Nonetheless, on this occasion, I would like to share some very joyous news that we recently received — on June 10th, the Vatican released a decree upgrading the liturgical memory of Saint Mary Magdalene to a Feast that will henceforward be celebrated yearly.
The message of this decree fills us with joy because of the importance of the person and message of Mary Magdalene — and to us this also confirms the great providentiality of the growing significance of Magdala.
It seems to me that Pope Francis considered three main motivations within the present context of the church to make this decision:
• The first is to promote a deeper reflection on the dignity of woman, of which Mary Magdalene has always been a fountain of inspiration.
• Second is the consideration of the renewed focus on evangelization, given that Mary Magdalene has always been considered the “apostle to the apostles” by the church, since she was the first to share the good news of the resurrected Christ.
• Lastly, the Pope has considered the greatness of the mystery of divine mercy. During this extraordinary Year of Mercy called by the Pope, Mary Magdalene is seen as a great icon and example of divine mercy.
Friends, I invite you to thank God for this constant blessing that overflows Magdala and we ask for your continued prayers.
Fraternally yours,
Fr. Juan María Solana, LC
