Family is a blessing. Honoring your mother and father means honoring the whole family, elders, subordinates, employers, employees, and leaders. This commandment emphasizes the family because the Lord makes the family an image of Himself. We are all called to love and to give ourselves completely to others; family is self-giveness.

The relationships within the family give the foundations for our freedom, freedom of society, security, fraternity, learning and living moral values, valuing God, and caring for others. The fruits or rewards of this commandment are peace and prosperity.
